The Sarafan ChEM-H Chemistry/Biology Interface Training Program is a multi-departmental interdisciplinary program that complements the requirements of a student's degree-granting home department to provide cross training in concepts and techniques from chemistry and biology.

The Program provides graduate students with a community of cross-disciplinary peers and mentors that will broaden their exposure to scientific topics, perspectives, and techniques for investigation and will enhance their ability to effectively contribute in an increasingly multidisciplinary research environment. Students in the Program fulfill all of their departmental requirements and receive their Ph.D. degree through their home departments.
Key elements of the program include:
- Three laboratory rotations in the first year, with one rotation outside the trainee’s home department
- Graduate coursework in chemical biology, responsible conduct of research, and translational research
- Career development training and community building, journal club and faculty/student chalk talks in regular group meetings with other Program students and mentors
- Speaking and networking opportunities through an annual retreat, support to attend and present at a conference, and regular group meetings
- Training in translation science and avenues for contribution from a student’s primary area of expertise
- Communication training to empower trainees to share scientific concepts with the general public, other scientists, and enhance diversity within chemical biology, engineering, and clinical workforces
- Integration of rigorous and reproducible research throughout the curriculum

Students interested in exploring the interface between chemistry, biology, engineering, and medicine are encouraged to apply once they are admitted to a home department Ph.D. program at Stanford. ChEM-H partners with six Ph.D. programs (see below). However, students admitted to any Stanford Ph.D. program in chemistry, the biosciences, or engineering are welcome to apply. Current students in Stanford's Medical Scientist Training Program may also apply.
