Bioengineering CBI Cohort 1 Alumni

Kara Brower

Kara is a graduate student pursuing her Ph.D. in Bioengineering and Masters of Medicine with the School of Medicine. She is advised by Prof. Polly Fordyce and is working on the development and characterization of novel microfluidic platforms for single cell phenotyping and genotyping on chip with translational applications. Her current project is working toward the creation and sorting of nano-phosphor beads capable of  "one to one" encoding of a unique spectra with unique peptide or oligo in each bead, with large code set sizes, for probing an entire proteome or transcriptome. Before Stanford, Kara attended Yale University, completing a dual B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics. Between undergraduate education and graduate school, she worked to build a startup biotech company, IsoPlexis, with Prof. Rong Fan for the commercialization of a single cell immunophenotyping microfluidic device, which is entering its third year of operation in Branford, CT. Kara is excited to join the ChEM-H graduate class and looks forward to participating in the multi-disciplinary community that ChEM-H offers.
